In a major development, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has officially decided to rename Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road. According to an official government note, the Administrator and Municipal Commissioner of KMC approved this key arterial changes on the solemn occasion of Paschimbanga Divas.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari strongly commended the civic body's action, labeling it a "historic decision" instrumental in rectifying a long-standing historical wrong. Adhikari expressed that for decades, a major avenue of the city unacceptably bore the name of someone who willfully misused state power to orchestrate mass violence against innocent citizens for political leverage.
By renaming the street after Shri Gopal Mukherjee, whom he described as a fearless soul and a true guardian who saved thousands of lives, Adhikari emphasized that West Bengal is finally moving to correct history. He noted that the decision ensures due honor is given to the real heroes who stepped up as protectors during critical historical moments.
